Utsav Lal is the world’s leading player of the fluid piano, a novel creation which features string-sliding mechanisms, allowing pianists to access the ‘spaces between the notes’. He uses the instrument’s new microtonal capabilities to capture the nuances of raga music, with a style deeply influenced by Dhrupad and Hindustani classical as well as jazz and the Western piano repertoire. Now based out of New York, he teaches and performs, bringing new contexts and sonorities to traditional Indian classical music.
