Sukhvinder Singh + Roopa Panesar

Double Bill

DOUBLE BILL of A chance to witness one of the UK's finest tabla exponents and the best emerging artists  from the Carnatic tradition.

FIRST HALF

UK DEBUT PERFORMANCE

Panesar returns to the Darbar Festival after her sell out concert in 2011.  One of the finest sitar maestras she performs captivating and soul-stirring ragas from the Hindustani tradition of north India. She is accompanied on the table by Hussain, on of UK’s master musicians. Savour the development of the raag through its four stages or movements: the alaap (untimed exploration of the raag), jor (with a slight pulse exploration), jhalla (with a strong pulse) and finally the gat when it is joined in crescendo by the tabla.

Roopa Panesar (sitar)
Shahbaz Hussain (tabla)

SECOND HALF

Maverick tabla and jori master, Singh is one of the world's great percussion maestros who has created a unique signature sound from the gentle to thunderous virtuosic rhythmic improvisations. Singh has built up a unique knowledge base from the grand masters of the Punjab and Benares styles of percussion. He learnt his art from Pandit Kishen Maharaj (1923-2008) and many other stalwarts from the Punjab school of tabla. Singh takes you on a rhythmic journey from the slow improvisation through the structured groovy permutations and combinations to end with a crescendo of mind-bending set pieces.  A long-awaited solo so book early.

Sukvinder 'Pinky' Singh (tabla)
Milind Kulkarni (harmonium nagma)
