Kaushiki Chakraborty and Pandit Kushal Das

Double Bill

India’s maestros explore late night ragas in celebration of 101 years since Pandit Ravi Shankar’s birth

An immersive double bill featuring two of India’s finest musicians. Das brings profound depth and emotion that is nothing less than soul-stirring. He brings a gimmick free performance of India’s iconic instrument, the sitar. Delight in the outpouring of pure improvised music through the movements of alaap (exploration of the raag) and gat (with rhythmic accompaniment). During the jhalla movement (exploration of the raag through rhythmic pulse) listen out for the sounds of the magical temple bells. He is accompanied by Singh, acclaimed for his improvisational brilliance, intensity and high-energy performances on the jori and tabla.

Pandit Kushal Das (sitar)
Sukhwinder Singh (jori/tabla)

The supremely accomplished, Chakraborty, from the Patiala gharana (school of music) provides a mesmerising finale to the Darbar Festival at the Barbican Centre with her opulent, inventive style. She is joined on the stage with three wonderful accompanying musicians Talwalkar, Khan and Kulkarni that will bring magical radiance to the exploration of ragas. In this concert Chakraborty sings midnight ragas, rarely sung due to venue restrictions in both London and India.  Her astonishing khayal vocal technique and explosive energy have become her trademark - a concert not to be missed.

Kaushiki Chakraborty (vocal)
Shahbaz Hussain (tabla)
Milind Kulkarni (harmonium)
