Kala Ramnath

Profile Image

Kala Ramnath is one of India’s most adept violinists, sliding around the fretboard in a strikingly vocalistic style. Her approach is focused on Hindustani classical music, but she also incorporates ideas from her South Indian roots. She was born in Chennai to a family that included esteemed Carnatic violinists TN Krishnan and N Rajam, but has oriented her study to North Indian forms, studying with Pandit Jasraj, vocal legend of the Mewati gharana, for 15 years.

In recent years she has performed classically around the world as well as working with musicians from jazz, flamenco, Western classical, and African traditional music. In 2006 she recorded on the Blood Diamond soundtrack, and in 2016 collaborated with the Kronos Quartet, adapting Raag Shuddh Nat (‘nectar’) for a string ensemble. Outside her playing career she seeks to improve the lives of underprivileged children through music through Kalashree, her charitable foundation.

"Like an angel in human form. Just to watch her play is an extraordinary thing. She has this tremendously relaxed, sublime way of playing that draws you in immediately. She’s known for her incredibly lyrical playing...She’s one of the greatest musicians on the planet." [Terry Riley]
