Padam and Javali: Twin Elements of Love

Sat 23 November, 07:00 PM, Lilian Baylis Studio, Sadler's Wells

Session 1

Chennai-born Swapnasundari is a leading bharatanatyam dance artist, choreographer and vocalist.

Swapnasundari dances the padam and the javali to explore two different forms of love, the devotional (bhakti) and the romantic (sringara). She draws from a strong tradition of music and poetry inherent in the courtesan repertoire of South India, comprising of graceful limb movements and detailed facial expressions to depict contrasting emotions.

Renowned for her improvisational skills in developing poetic metaphors with deep musicality, Swapnasundari blends the playful with the cerebral. She dances to a rich sonic backdrop provided by three superb Carnatic classical musicians on vocals, violin and mridangam drum.

In the words of Akram Khan, who is curating Darbar Festival’s 2019 dance program, “there’s something universal about narratives from ancient Indian history – the grand themes, the shared myths, the flawed deities. Indian dancers place themselves in the shoes of gods as well as should feel like you’re all learning together rather than being taught”.
