Aditi Mangaldas – Movement, Mudra and Abhinaya

Sat 23 November, 07:00 PM, Lilian Baylis Studio, Sadler's Wells

Session 1

See one of the world’s most celebrated kathak dancers shed light on her artistry and technique in this unique performance lecture, created especially for Darbar Festival.

In the intimate setting of the Lilian Baylis Studio, Mangaldas explores language and poetry through movement, mudra (hand gestures) and abhinaya (facial expressions). Supported by live and recorded music, Mangaldas presents three short works from her repertoire, employing the performance structure as a framework for offering rare and exclusive insight into her creative process.

In the words of Akram Khan, who is curating Darbar Festival’s 2019 dance program, “there’s something universal about narratives from ancient Indian history – the grand themes, the shared myths, the flawed deities. Indian dancers place themselves in the shoes of gods as well as mortals...you should feel like you’re all learning together rather than being taught”.
