Morning Bliss with Gundecha Brothers

Sat 12 October, 10:00 AM, Milton Court

Session 1

Ramakant Gundecha dhrupad vocal

Umakant Gundecha dhrupad vocal

Dnyaneshwar Deshmukh pakhwaj

The Gundecha brothers are the leading exponents of the most evolved style of Indian classical music known as dhrupad. Immerse yourself in this special morning concert as they improvise around the raga’s tonic note, dipping below it in long, resonant tones and then creeping above it, across a two and a half octave range. Eventually the tones shorten into shimmering staccato barrages that grow increasingly intense, suggesting rapidly plucked sitar notes” (Washington Post). The Gundecha Brothers trained in the Dagar tradition from the legendary vocalists, Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. The Brothers keep help keep the dhrupad tradition alive through their Gurukul (conservatoire) in Bhopal, India.
