Niladri Kumar Seduced by the Sitar

Tue 13 March, 07:00 PM, Milton Court, London

Session 1

Niadri Kumar sitar

Sukhvinder Singh tabla and jori

An evening of deeply moving sitar ragas, performed by one of the most promising artists from a new generation of Indian Classical musicians.

Since garnering an international audience in the days of maestros Ustad Vilayat Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar, the sound of the sitar has captivated the world.

Born into a family of musicians, Niladri Kumar, 5th generation sitarist at the tender age of four showed immense aptitude and readiness towards playing the Instrument. His natural draw towards music was thereafter extensively moulded, enhanced, trained and disciplined under the guidance of his Guru and Father Pandit Kartick Kumar. Picking up the sitar at the age of four, inspired and taught by his father – a student of Pandit Ravi Shankar – Niladri Kumar’s career has seen him embrace the versatility and depth of India’s iconic instrument. Being ‘sympathetic to pick up' new trends, Niladri decided to push the boundaries and go beyond his comfort zone to invent his own instrument - an electric sitar that he coined as the 'Zitar'.

This is an opportunity to witness a performance from one of the instrument’s modern masters. Accompanied by tabla and jori player Sukhwinder Singh, Kumar unravels moving ragas with his signature style of fluid melody, bent notes and flurries of virtuosic improvisation.
