Benares Rhythm Essentials

Sat 11 November, 11:30 PM, Sadler's Wells, Lilian Baylis

Session 1

Surdarshan Chana tabla and jori solo

Milind Kulkarni nagma

Chana is an emerging master with an extraordinary depth and understanding of the jori percussion instrument, which was invented by the Sikh Guru's for accompaniment to gurbani sangeet (spiritual singing). Historically Sikhs were persecuted as a minority by Moghul rulers and from this oppression came the concept of chardikala or eternal optimism. Stories of their persecution are evoked by Chana using the jori and the language of paranth (oral notation). He is accompanied by Kulkarni who provides micro accurate timekeeping. Please note that this concert will finish at 1am.
